🇦🇺 Australia's Largest Linen Retailer 5,000m+ Sold Every Month No Minimum - By the Metre 3-8 Day Australia-Wide Delivery

Super Cheap Fabrics is Australia's largest linen fabric retailer - moving over 5,000 metres of linen every month to makers, designers, and sewists across Australia and New Zealand. Our linen range covers every weight and finish: Pure Linen sourced from Belgium and Lithuania, Linen Blend for easier everyday sewing, and Printed Linen for projects that need personality - all sold by the metre with no minimum order.

Linen is one of the most versatile natural fibres you can work with. In summer it breathes better than cotton and keeps you cool in the heat. In winter it layers beautifully - heavier pure linen and linen blends trap warmth without bulk, making them ideal for structured winter garments, warm curtains, and cosy home textiles. It's a year-round fabric that only gets better the more you use it.

Linen in Winter - What You Need to Know

Linen gets unfairly pigeonholed as a summer fabric. In reality, linen is one of the best natural fibres for Australian winters - particularly in Melbourne, Sydney, and the southern states where winters are cool but rarely extreme. Here's why it works:

The hollow fibre structure of flax means linen regulates temperature naturally - it traps warmth when the air is cool and releases heat when it warms up. Heavier-weight pure linen (180gsm+) provides real insulation for winter trousers, coats, and structured blazers. Linen blends add softness and reduce the stiffness that can come with pure linen in colder weather. Linen also layers exceptionally well - it sits cleanly under knitwear without bunching and over thermal bases without adding visible bulk. For interiors, linen curtains and cushion covers add winter texture and warmth to a room in a way that synthetic fabrics simply can't match.

Where Our Linen Comes From

Where linen is grown and woven makes a significant difference to how it feels, sews, and lasts. We source across four key regions:

🇧🇪 Belgium
The world benchmark for fine linen. Belgian flax grown in the cool wet Flanders region produces the longest-staple fibres available - resulting in linen that is softer, stronger, and more lustrous than most alternatives. Our finest pure linens come from here.
🇱🇹 Lithuania
Eastern Europe's leading linen producer with centuries of flax weaving tradition. Lithuanian mills produce dense, durable linen with a clean natural finish - excellent for heavier garments and winter home textiles.
🇨🇳 China
Our linen blends and printed linens are woven in Zhejiang and Jiangsu mills known for consistent quality and fine finishing. China accounts for the majority of the world's linen blend production.
🇮🇳 India
Indian mills produce excellent linen-cotton blends with a natural, slightly textured hand. Ideal for casual garments and lightweight home pieces. Every bolt is quality-checked before it reaches our store.

We turn stock fast - over 5,000 metres per month means what you're buying from our Collingwood warehouse is fresh, not sitting unsold for years. Every bolt is inspected before it goes live online or hits the shelf in-store.

Why Australian Makers Choose Linen

Linen is made from flax - one of the oldest cultivated plants on earth - and it has been the fabric of choice for Australian makers for good reason. In summer, the hollow fibre structure circulates air and wicks moisture away from the skin, keeping you cooler than cotton. In winter, that same structure traps warmth and layers naturally under other fabrics. It presses crisply, holds structure well under the needle, and the more you wash it the softer and better-looking it gets.

Pure linen wrinkles - that's a feature, not a flaw. If you want the natural look of linen with less creasing, our Linen Blend range gives you both. Pair linen with Cotton, Viscose, or Silk for layered combinations that work across every season.

Linen fabric - common questions

Is linen fabric good for winter in Australia?
Linen is a genuinely year-round fabric. Heavier-weight pure linen and linen blends provide real warmth for winter trousers, structured blazers, and coats - without the bulk of heavier fabrics. Linen regulates temperature naturally, trapping warmth when it's cold and releasing it when it warms up. It also layers beautifully under knitwear and over thermal bases, and is a go-to fabric for winter curtains and home textiles in Melbourne, Sydney, and the southern states.
Where does Super Cheap Fabrics source its linen from?
We source linen from Belgium and Lithuania - the global benchmark for European flax linen - and from China and India for our linen blends and printed ranges. Belgian and Lithuanian linen is grown from long-staple flax in ideal cool-wet conditions producing the finest, strongest fibres available. Our Chinese and Indian linen comes from established mill partnerships and is quality-checked before it reaches our Collingwood warehouse.
What is the difference between Belgian linen and Chinese linen?
Belgian linen (and Lithuanian linen) is grown from long-staple flax in the cool wet climate of Western Europe - producing a finer, softer, stronger fabric with better lustre and durability. It's the world's premium linen. Chinese linen is more affordable and performs excellently for blends and casual everyday garments. Choose European linen for high-quality garment sewing; choose Chinese linen blends for projects where budget matters without sacrificing the look and feel of linen.
Does linen shrink when washed?
Pure linen can shrink 3-5% on the first wash - always pre-wash before cutting and sewing. Use cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle and hang or lay flat to dry. After pre-washing, linen stabilises completely and gets softer and better-looking with every subsequent wash. Linen blends shrink less than pure linen due to the added viscose or cotton content.
Can I buy linen by the metre with no minimum order?
Yes - all linen at Super Cheap Fabrics is sold by the metre with no minimum order. Buy 0.5m to test a fabric before committing, or several metres for a full project. We ship Australia-wide in 3-8 business days. You can also visit us in-store at 153 Sackville Street, Collingwood VIC 3066 - 5 minutes from Melbourne CBD - where you can feel and compare the full linen range in person.
Can linen be used for home décor and winter interiors?
Absolutely. Medium and heavier-weight linens work beautifully for cushion covers, curtains, table runners, and upholstery. In winter specifically, linen curtains add weight, insulation, and texture to a room - blocking drafts while looking far more refined than polyester alternatives. Linen's natural variation and tactile finish adds warmth to winter interiors in a way synthetic fabrics can't replicate.
What is the difference between pure linen and linen blend?
Pure linen is 100% flax - crisp, breathable, and characterful. It wrinkles naturally and is best for garments where you want authentic linen texture and performance. Linen blend combines flax with viscose or cotton, giving you improved drape, reduced creasing, and a slightly softer hand. Blends are easier to sew, more wrinkle-resistant, and more forgiving for beginners. Both are excellent - the right choice depends on what you're making and how you want it to behave.
